You'll need to follow a few steps to get this up and running. Gmail is the easier of the two clients to get this working on but you can also find instructions for apple mail below if ye be so brave.
Noticed an error or want to make some tweaks? Feel free to make some changes. Otherwise lets see how to get ‘er up and running below.
Make sure everything is highlighted in the box above, then hit (Command + C) to copy your signature
how to use your fancy new Grit email signature
1
First Scroll back up and copy your signature
Yep that signature in the box at the top of the page there.
Make sure all the info is correct and then select and drag over everything in the box (make sure you're only in the box) and hit (Command + C). Your highlights should look similar to what is pictured here.
2
Open Gmail in a new tab and head to the settings.
It’ll be at the top right of the page, above your inbox. It looks like a gear right next to the grit icon and your picture icon.
Click that there gear and hit that there settings button. This will take you to the Gmail settings page.
3
Paste in your new email signature and review.
About halfway down the page you’ll come across a Signature section. You can either create a new signature from scratch or totally delete and replace your old signature, your choice.
Click into the completely blank text box and then hit (Command + V) on the keyboard to paste in your new signature.
Double check your signature and make sure everything looks fine and dandy. Set your options for when you’d like your signature to appear, scroll to the bottom of the page and hit save.
4
Test it out!
Compose a new email and check and make sure your signature is displaying correctly.
But wait there’s more! Google Suite Icon.
For bonus points you can even set your Grit Google Suite account image to your new signature profile image. Yay consistency!
Click the button below to download your image.
You can then update your google suite image by clicking the grit icon box in the top right and then the image icon that appears in the dropdown.
Sorry you don't have an image yet. If you'd like to add one let Katie Wilson know and she can get the ball rolling from there.
So you've chosen the path more difficult, have ye? To incorporate the new signature in Apple Mail you'll have to edit the computer's system files. It's not as scary as it sounds but it is more steps than gmail and there's more room for error. Ye hath been warned.
1
Open Apple Mail and Create a placeholder signature
Crack open apple mail and go to Mail > Preferences in the menu bar.
From there, select your gmail account, create a new placeholder signature and type something in the right hand panel. It doesn't matter what you type as we're going to replace this later.
Make sure to uncheck the "always match font" checkbox at the bottom.
Close the window when you're done to save.
2
Open finder and navigate to the latest version of Apple Mail
Open finder and use the Go > Go to Folder command in the menu. From here you'll want to navigate to your system mail files on your machine. Copy and paste this whole string into the "Go To Folder" dialogue box:
~/Library/Mail/
From here go into the folders for latest version of your mail client. For me it's V8. It may be something different for you.
3
Find the Signatures Folder and the latest signature file
Within these folders you should have a signatures folder that follows this path:
MailData / Signatures
Within the Signatures folder, find the signature file (.mailsignature is the filetype) that was updated today by checking the file's modified date and time.
Right click and open the file with Text Edit.
Yours won't be named test.mailsignature, it'll likely just be a long jumbled string of characters. We check the date and time to make sure it's the correct signature that we just created.
4
Next, I need you to click this fancy button.
You could have also clicked the copy button above under the Apple Mail Tab above, you’ll know that for next time if you want to update it. Lucky you!
This copies all the code needed for your signature.
For Apple Mail, Please don’t try to copy and paste your signature manually, just click the button, each mail program works differently so what works for Gmail won't work for Apple Mail.
5
Replace the bottom content of the signature file
Once you've got the text file open, highlight everything in the bottom section of the file. This should be everything below the line about the "Mime-Version."
Hit (Command + V) to paste in your new signature code that you copied by clicking the button from step 2.
Save and close the file to commit your changes.
6
Lock your file to prevent Mail from overriding it
After you've saved and closed the text file we'll need to lock it to prevent Apple Mail from overwriting it again. Right click the file and click "get info".
It'll open the dialog box and from there we'll need to check the box that says "Lock File." Close the dialogue box when you're done and you should see a lock icon next to it now in finder.
7
Restart Apple Mail and Test Your Changes
Close and restart apple mail for your signature to take effect. As long as it's selected as the signature for your gmail account you should see it populate when creating a new email.
For style points you can also update your google account icon with your Grit signature portrait. See step 4 in the Gmail instructions to learn how.
